First Pricing Guy

Jack drew on his experience as the first pricing hire at a three-month-old household MGA to explore what the role actually demands when a start-up has no data, no products, and no tech. He framed the scenario as a live interview question — what would you offer here? — before walking through his own answer: think company strategy before departmental strategy, replicate the best elements of competitors rather than chase a USP, and act as the point of contact and trainer on all things insurance for a team without insurance backgrounds. The session covered the practical pricing routes available when you have nothing of your own to model on (consumer surveys, market pricing from competitor prices, cost-plus, dynamic and optimisation approaches), and closed with a candid look at the start-up environment and the technical and personal skill-set needed to survive it.
